"Winter Wonderland: Exploring Chamonix's Alpine Charm"

Nestled in the heart of the French Alps, Chamonix beckons with its breathtaking views, world-class skiing, and charming alpine ambiance. A haven for outdoor enthusiasts, this picturesque town offers a playground of adventure amidst snow-capped peaks and cascading glaciers. Whether you're skiing through powdery slopes or simply soaking in the serene beauty of nature, Chamonix promises an unforgettable escape into winter wonder.

My family and I stayed in Chamonix, France in February of 2024. This was my second time exploring the beautiful town. Unfortunately for us, this past February was a warmer month for this region. However, my family and I were still able to enjoy the gorgeous landscapes and charming town. Below, I will give you some insight on our weekend trip so that hopefully it will help you when planning your trip to this amazing region!

Where to Stay:

Chalet Hôtel le Prieuré & Spa

Just a couple minutes from town, this hotel and spa was in a perfect location. From the moment you step through the doors, the staff offered a warm welcome. The room was spacious and comfortable. The full breakfast bar was delicious. You can rent your ski or snowboard equipment right next door as the rental shop was attached to the hotel. The spa was amazing! You can relish in the magnificent views of the snow capped mountains while relaxing in the jacuzzi. Could not recommend this hotel more!!

What to Do:

Auguille du Midi, Chamonix centre

Ascend to the highest point in the Chamonix area by cable car! Once you reach the top, you can see Mont Blanc. Plan for at least two to three hours for this journey. When you reach the top, you can take your time to explore a variety of platforms and viewpoints to observe the mountain range.

  • Winter Rates

    • Adults, children & seniors: 55 euros

  • Summer Rates

    • Adults, children & seniors: 57.50 euros

If you buy the Mont-Blanc unlimited pass, that will give you access to Auguille du Midi plus skiing.

Ski/Snowboard

Chamonix is a paradise for ski and snowboarders! First, you will need to buy a pass.

  • Chamonix Le Pass - gives you access to the Brévent-Flégère, Grands Montets and Balme ski areas

  • Mont Blanc Unlimited - covers all areas in the Chamonix valley, including the Aiguille du Midi lift and a whole lot more

  • Les Houches pass - gives you access in the Les Houches resort

We opted for the Chamonix Le Pass because we only skied one day. This option was more than enough for us as a beginner/intermediate ski family.

Paragliding

We did not have time to paraglide this trip but I have paraglided before in Chamonix and it was an incredible experience I will never forget! I highly recommend it. I am no dare devil so if I can do it, anyone can.

Where to Eat:

I like to do LOTS of research when it comes to restaurants when traveling. Chamonix definitely has a good list of some great restaurants to try. I narrowed it down based on food, location, price, and ambience.

  1. La Maison Carrier

My husband and I enjoyed this restaurant as an early birthday dinner and it did not disappoint! Located in a very quaint chalet, you felt like you were transported back in time when you walked in. From the open fire pit to the mouthwatering dessert table, this restaurant was top notch. It checked all my restaurant “boxes” :)

2. Restaurant Le Cap-Horn

This is one of the more popular restaurants in Chamonix. Located right in the town, it was an easy walk from our hotel. The food was delicious but I will say that we did feel a little cramped. The tables were super close together so we we were able to hear lots of conversations around us. But the food and ambience were great! The restaurant was packed so make sure you book ahead!

3. La Calèche

Cheese fondue is my family’s top favorite foods! We were definitely super excited to try some fondue while on this trip. The ambience was amazing. Located in a large chalet in the middle town, this restaurant was filled with copper pots & large cowbells. The fondue was icing on the cake for the last meal of our trip. Tip: if you’ve had fondue before, try the raclette dish which comes usually with a special raclette grill where you scrape off the melted cheese and enjoy with potatoes, bread or meat.

4. Bighorn Bistro

This family run business was somewhere I visited twice back in 2018 when I studied abroad. I knew I needed to take my family here when we decided to visit Chamonix. We booked the Sunday brunch. Loved!!! Such a good brunch. More than enough food for all of us. Service was lovely. Highly recommend for brunch, lunch or dinner.
